Asha Jaquila Degree (pronounced AY-shuh) went missing from Shelby, North Carolina, on February 14, 2000. For unknown reasons, she packed her bookbag and walked 1.3 mile [2.1 km] from her home to Highway 18 in the middle of the dark, cold, wet night. She allegedly was spotted by several witnesses, one of whom approached her in their car out of concern. Spooked, she ran into the woods and hasn't been seen since.

Why would someone risk leaving a ransom note during child kidnappings. Are there any kidnappings where a ransom was paid, and the child was actually returned alive? The only one I can think of is Paul Getty III (he was a teen when kidnapped). He was returned after a smaller ransom was negotiated.
