Why are there no Background characters in Bleach?

I'm currently in episode 37 of bleach and I can't help but feel like the bleach world seems very lonely. When Ichigo is walking home, there is no one around. When Orohime was sweeping with her friends in school there was no one around. When Chad was running to the playground there were only a few kids there. Why is bleach lonelier than real life?
