Dubai Desert Beater
Hi all, I live in the Middle East, near Dubai and I'm looking for a car that I can take out dune bashing and camping on the weekends. I have the new Nissan Patrol as a family car, which is capable enough offroad, but is severely underpowered for its 3 ton weight and I fear damaging the car again offroad. I define "beater" as a cheap enough car that I can seriously take offroad and not too feel bad about it. The considerations for the car are: • 4WD with Hi/Lo transfer case (no AWDs) • Locking differential • 4+ seats • Adequate ground clearance • Easily attainable parts + somewhat reliable • Under 10k AED (~2700 USD)
So far these are the cars that I've looked into: • Jeep Cherokee XJ, a spacious and reliable car, although capable, it is slightly underpowered, and OEM diff locks are rare. Some additional modifications would be needed, and rarely do I find XJs for below 10k AED. • Jeep Wranglers, mostly the same points as the Cherokee, but demand and price for these are higher. Likely out of my budget. • Nissan R50 platform (2000s Pathfinder, Infiniti QX4), the one I've been leaning towards most, and perfectly fits the criteria. The Nissan Pathfinder goes for around 8k AED, while the Infiniti QX4 goes for around 6k with nicer features and options. Any known problems with the Infiniti QX4 platform? I'm looking to pull the trigger on one of these cars.
Any input is appreciated, Thanks Everyone.
