Recommended miniature games
I have played the majority of Boardgamegeek’s top 100 games (and own quite a few), but I’ve got little experience with miniature games. Could you make any recommendations? My core principles are:
1) I will be playing it 100% of the time with friends who likely won’t have the game, so I want something I can buy the necessary things and they can come over to play. I.e. I don’t care how popular it is elsewhere and anything that requires detailed list building or is overly complex is a negative.
2) Engaging gameplay is by far the most important aspect to me. I want to avoid a game where two armies just run into each other and dice determine who wins. I want more strategic decisions (maybe multiple points of interest so you’ve got to split armies up?). I’m not a hobby gamer so the quality of the miniatures and painting them ranks very low.
3) other wishes are: - for it to not be too fiddly (I.e. long turns, loads of caveats to rules, many moving pieces etc. - supports team play (if a streamlined coop mode exists that’s even better) - have heroic units that feel heroic. - if it’s based on an IP that I’ll likely be familiar with, that’s a bonus. - plays in a reasonable amount of time, anything that goes over 2 hours I think is too long.
I own X-Wing which I love, as I can pre-build ships and give my friends the opportunity to pick what they want to play and be in a game very quickly. The gameplay is engaging too with interesting decisions to outplay one another.
I’ve played Middle Earth SBG a couple of times with a friends set, and in my limited experience it feels like all we do is setup our troops in a line on one side of the board and advance forward until there is a mosh pit in the middle. I really love LotR lore, but this game left me wanting much more. I felt like the game was ‘on rails’ with limited decisions to make throughout. I appreciate we may not have played it in its best form given we’re new.
Many thanks in advance!
