What makes a good flag?

I was having a discussion with some friends about out local flag and they said it was ugly, I replied ugliness is subjective and how it is not a good reason to say it is a bad flag and it sparked a whole discussion on it.

I wanted to ask the higher minds of reddit what makes a good flag for you?
