There is way too much coconut oil in vegan "dairy" products
This is not a new idea exactly, but I want to get more specific here describing the current state of these food alternatives than what I've read in other posts. Vegan alternative food products, and particularly vegan "dairy" products, rely almost exclusively on coconut oil. Vegan cheese, cream cheese, butter, and ice cream are probably the worst offenders - nearly every product in the super market is coconut oil based, with an extremely high concentration of saturated fat. There are some products that don't rely on coconut oil, but they can be far and few between and I'd really love to see more options. When there are so many other plant-based fat sources you can choose from, it is frustrating to see the reliance on coconut oil. I think that making food products healthier would win over some consumers that will otherwise avoid these products.
Nutrition is of course a complicated and evolving topic, but I do understand that current science says it's best to limit your saturated fat content, and favor unsaturated fats for cardiovascular health. I do like that Kite Hill cream cheese is almond based and that Good Planet cheeses are olive oil based, to name a couple examples of products that don't use coconut oil.
What do you think? Will we see options improve? Am I overreacting about how bad coconut oil / saturated fat is for you?
