What's with everyone in the show being obsessed with abbreviations for names ?

Is it an italian thing? I get Carm for Carmella, but is Ton, Sil, Med, Aid and June really necessary for already short names? Not to mention who the hell calls a Tuna Sandwhich a Tuna Sand? it's ridiculous. Anyway I think they were a legitimate family and not a glorified crew.
