How safe is Tampa for a woman traveling alone, without a car?

Hello, I will be visiting Tampa for an academic conference which will be held at the Tampa Convention Center. I will have a few days before the conference when I can explore Tampa, and I am planning to visit some museums and parks. I'm a woman in my 20s and I will be traveling alone, what should I look out for at Tampa? I won't have a car, are public transportation and walking safe? I will have a dinner one evening which ends at 10 pm at Tampa Downtown, is it safe for me to walk back to the hotel alone (0.5 mile)? I'm from Europe and this will be my first trip to the USA.
