[Opinion / Discussion] I think I know why the Sox haven't added a 3B / RHH yet
I think the Sox would love Bregman, but not at his price. Additionally, any move to add Bregman requires at least 1 additional move to get the team aligned properly, AND could have players in undesirable positions (Breg @ 2B, Devers @ 1B, etc.) or be blocking rising talent (Campbell blocked @ 2B).
On the other hand, a trade for Nolan Arenado makes much more sense. While he might not be the same player that Bregman would be, adding Arenado adds more benefits.
Obviously the Cards would have to agree to the trade, but here's a proposal:
SOX GET: Nolan Arenado + Ryan Helsley
CARDS GET: Wilyer Abreu + Masataka Yoshida
Sox give up the best player (Abreu) in the deal. However, this trade does the following:
- Adds elite 3B defense, making that side of the infield the best defense in baseball
- Brings veteran leadership
- Brings a RHH
- Only costs 3/$76.5 instead of whatever Bregman wants/will get
- Gives Mayer someone to learn from defensive-wise (Story + Arenado mentors)
- Frees up the DH spot for Devers
- Doesn't put Devers at 1B
- Doesn't displace Casas or Campbell
- Adds another bullpen arm
However, this deal also does one thing that remains an unknown: it frees up an OF spot for Roman Anthony to play. And I think this is the crux of why we haven't seen movement - because the Sox want to get to Ft Meyers and see if this is a reality.
This could mean that our hitters are:
- IF: Casas / Campbell / Story / Arenado
- OF: Duran / Rafaela / Anthony
- DH: Devers
- C: Wong
TL;DR I think we haven't seen the Sox make a 3B / RHH acquisition because they want to know if Roman Anthony can make the Opening Day / early April lineup.
