Anyone else find "one way" video interviews utterly dehumanizing?
Just had one for a tech support position. I get these companies get so many responses that they don't have time to do first round interviews like they used to, but IMO one way interviews are exponentially more stressful than talking to a human being. Five seconds to consider the question, one minute to answer, no second chances (although I might have fudged this part by disconnecting before the recording finished...).
The actual tech questions were easy, but stuff like "Describe a time you demonstrated your communication skills" damn near killed me. Sure, it's a question you would get asked in an interview, but even just thinking on the response took longer than the time I was given and I ended up rambling just so I wouldn't have a video of me just staring slack-jawed at the camera.
At least when you're talking to a human there is a sort of flow to the conversation. They even expect you to take a moment to consider your response before answering. Having to read the question and consider how to respond in the span of five seconds doesn't give you nearly enough time to come up with an articulate answer.
