What should I expect for my first ultrasound?

I was always under the impression that the doctor put some gel on your belly and rolled a plastic thing over that to see the fetus. But I just read an article that said there’s something called a transvaginal ultrasound? Will my first ultrasound be the belly kind or the vagina kind? Just need to mentally prepare!
