That was so bittersweet

I played this immediately after Metaphor with no real knowledge of persona and I did not expect that gut punch of a ending. Makoto just dies like that? No goodbyes? Nothing? I get the whole message of the game was to not fear death but man knowing everyone and everything you leave behind hurts. I plan on replaying the game, but is there anything I missed hinting to his return?
