MTG Forge - Adventure Mode; How is this game not more popular? The best current Modern CCG Open World RPG?
After reminiscing this week about the CCG RPGs I use to play as a kid (Yugioh Forbidden Memories, Duel Masters for the GBA), I've been looking online for any recent ones that have come out that would scratch that nostalgic itch.
It turns out that there's an insanely fun free to play open world MTG RPG that ticks all of the boxes that had me addicted to these card battlers of yesteryear.
You start with a chosen color and crappy starter deck to go with it (or absolutely chaotic pile of random cards that resemble the old school starter decks if you so choose). You grind quests, monsters, dungeons, caves to accumulate gold and equipment to make your character stronger and improve your deck.
Random smaller villages/towns will have draft and/or jumpstart/sealed tournaments you play in vs the locals that can help you accumulate much needed spells/lands early on in your game. The first town I came across had a commander draft which helped me pivot into a monarch/midrange strategy to clear out some dungeons.
I just found that there's also some additional game mechanics in one of the large capital cities, that include a gladiator-esque arena that can be played to farm gold and equipment. There's a smith in which you can pay gold to have them create you a card with certain selected criteria you choose (colors/cost/rarity).
There's a main questline (albeit not that fleshed out) with tough boss battles. There's dozens of different varieties of card shops to spend your gold on (shops for artifacts, or wizards, or rare lands, the list goes on), and secondary "gem"-like currency to re-roll shop items or used to spend casting spells/utilizing equipment you have equipped during battles.
The best part? It seemingly has EVERY Magic card out right now. I started playing last night and was shocked when I found Duskmourn's twitching doll in one of the shops. It slotted perfectly into my golgari artifact sac deck that I've been building (found an early chatterfang and academy manufacturer, work with what you get!).
Being limited by gold, your starting equipment/deck/life and just trying to get a deck cooking via the limited resources you have in the early game has been incredibly fun and exciting for the brewer inside of me.
Is anyone else currently playing this? Post your deck if so and any tips! This seems like a potentially fun game to speedrun or play with harder rules (like ironman or permadeath). Anyone know of any alternative run-types such as this?
Here's screenshots for the curious, first one is a picture of me in a capital city and the second is my deck. Here's what other things such as what a fight encounter/arena tournament bracket/shop looks like. https://postimg.cc/gallery/YWKQKVt
