The current lesbian flag lives rent free im my brain.
I spent all my teenage years on tumblr and feminist blogs in general (outside of tumblr too) and maybe that's why it occupies such a large place in my brain.
There’s been this big shift toward the sunset lesbian flag designed by Emily Gwen as the mainstream consensus for representing lesbians. And it is kinda wild to me that this flag, though similar to a not so cool existing lesbian flag, was a creation from just some girl on tumblr. Assuming everything claimed by her social profiles to be real ofc.
And yeah sure I know it’s the internet, so maybe it doesn’t matter that much. And it’s probably for the best of her safety and well-being that she remains that anonymous and some social media posts to be all we know about her.
It also bugs my brain that this girl designed the most popular lesbian symbol but doesn’t profit financially or socially from it as much as the grifters that are out there using lesbianism as an aesthetic, rewriting history, and all the social implications of what it means to be a lesbian.
But I think what bothers me the most is how these flag have also been weaponized to spread misinformation about other lesbian issues. For instance, profiling anyone who uses the labrys flag as a certain type of person even if it means revising history to imply malice in what was previously the mainstream symbol adopted by lesbians.
I feel like girlie was just online goofin’ and gaffin’ and now is the official symbol of an entire group and here we are.
I don’t have anywhere else to talk about this because I have no lesbian friends, and the friends I have are probably tired of me ranting about random fringe lesbian internet lore.
This also my be just my brain responding to yet another flag with no meaning showing up in my online wanderings on the other lesbian related subs.
