Why do people game scrobbles?

Other than artificially pumping up artists' listens, I don't understand why anyone is attempting to rack up obscene numbers of scrobbled just because. I love a good Numbers Go Up idle game but I don't understand why someone would treat Last.fm that way. Anyone got any insight?

Edit: To clarify, I mean when people play music they aren't listening to.
