Play In Seeding Question

Reading a lot of comments here has me confused. I was under the impression that as long as Lakers can get to the 8th seed. They’d just have to win their matchup against the 7th seed to secure the 7th seed right? Keep seeing many people mention they would still have to win 2 play in games to lock a spot in the playoffs. Which scenario is correct?
