What do dead people do until the day of judgement?

As you know, in islam once you are dead, your soul goes into a state of waiting while in the grave until judgement day. Would this feel as long as it actually is? For example, muslims who died 1300 years ago - their souls have been waiting for 1300 years so far, and only God knows for how many more centuries they will wait.

But there are a few mentions in the Quran about how the days can feel like they are different lengths, for example: when the day of judgement is near, some hadiths mention that one day will feel like 40 days, one day like a year, etc. Would it be similar to that?
