Person and movement pattern detection for occupancy with cameras?

I have 3 floors and in the centre of each floor is a small hallway and staircase. Would it be possible to have a camera at each hallway that could recognize individuals and their movement? Then update room presence based on which direction they headed?

For example A is walking towards the living room and entering the door, so mark A in the living room. B is also walking towards the living room but stops and takes the stairs downstairs, marking B being in the stairs heading downstairs. C is walking towards the bedroom and entering, so C is marked in the bedroom.
