Things I Didn't Know About Hadestown Until I Saw It Live (spoilers)

I had the amazing opportunity to see Hadestown live on Sunday, in front row seats no less! Here's some of the things I noticed after having loved the soundtrack for a long time but never having seen it live.

  • In Road to Hell, when Hermes says "and there were three old women all dressed the same" the Fates turn around and glare at him
  • when Eurydice asks for a match, Orpheus tries to offer her one but she doesn't see
  • They first meet when Orpheus is setting up a stage mic and she runs to him. They proceed to stare at each other wordless for the next forty-five seconds while the chorus dances behind them
  • Eurydice is extremely jumpy and keeps running away anytime a man gets close to her until after Wedding Song
  • When Eurydice sings "kinda makes you wonder how it feels" during Way Down Hadestown, Hades stops what he's doing to lower his sunglasses and stare at her
  • to that point, every time Hades is in the surface world he puts on sunglasses because it's too bright for him
  • From Gathering Storm until Wait For Me (6 songs), Orpheus is off to the side of the stage working on his song, trying out chords and writing lyrics
  • the Fates have the weirdest expressions at all times they are so intense and Acting™️ to the max
  • During Wait For Me the lights swung over our heads in the front row
  • Why We Build the Wall is right before intermission and it is a heck of a place to stop
  • the intro to Our Lady of the Underground is longer than it is on the album, I'm assuming to give people longer to get back to their seats
  • Persephone is at almost all times obviously drunk, stumbling around, and slurring her words
  • During all of Flowers, Eurydice is kneeling at the front of the stage singing her heart out
  • The lighting changes during How Long? to match the singer, going from blue for Persephone to orange for Hades.
  • Seeing The Jump™️ in Wait for Me (Reprise) was so so cool
  • After Orpheus looks back and Eurydice disappears, he remains lying motionless on the floor until the lights dim briefly during Road to Hell (Reprise)
  • We of course gave them a standing ovation and then they starting singing We Raise Our Cups after bows and so we were all just standing while they sang it us and I cried again because it was just So Much

I'm sure there's so many more things I could mention but those are the ones that come to mind right now. All in all it was an absolutely fantastic experience I am so so glad I got to go see it live.
