Is anyone else planning to shift to an entirely different field if they get laid off?

I work in legal support at my agency. I've been there so long that I actually make great money. If I do anything similar in the private sector, it will involve a pay cut, according to my research. Also, there just aren't that many white collar opportunities in the private sector right now from what I've read. I'm thinking that I'll need to somehow start over in a completely different field that's more in demand and requires a very different skill set. So hard to do in your 40s.
