Should I leave federal job for county job?

Has anyone made the switch from Fed to county/state government? Is it easy to get back into a Fed position down the line? Do State/County jobs have the same reputation for being good benefits and job security?

I've been with the federal government for 12 years and I'm thinking of taking a county job that would be great for my career development. It would be a slight pay cut but the commute would be 10 min vs 1 hr....
