Can’t get a mortgage bc I’m from the US.
I’m a 36yo US citizen married to a Belgian. We both have legal full time residency in Belgium. Our combined income is around 50,000 euros per year. We’re currently renting a house, but we would like to buy. My husband approached a financial advisor at a large well-known bank to inquire about a mortgage. The guy told him that all banks in Belgium will never lend to a US citizen due to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. Apparently it’s too much paperwork and a liability to the bank if they submit incorrect documents to the US. He suggested to my husband that I either renounce my citizenship (not going to do that) or that my husband applies for the loan without me (my income would be left out of the mortgage application.)Does anyone have experience with obtaining a mortgage in a foreign country and navigating this FATCA stipulation?
