Question regarding the portal in the pit

Hey all! I ran quite a few pits, all kinds of levels with all kinds of builds. Yet I so far didn’t figure out when the white portal appears. I doesn’t seem to be tied to the timer or the amount of monsters I killed. Someone enlightens me please?
