My roommate says to never be direct! Thoughts?

I recently had a conversation with my roommate about dating and he says to never be direct, meaning to never tell a girl that you are asking her out on a date because then the chances of rejection will be bigger. Instead, suggest to simply hang out as friends and see how it goes from there.

What are your thougts on this?
