Caught myself before self-depreciating
My 3-year old has been obsessed with Spidey and His Amazing Friends lately, especially Ghost-Spider (Spider-Gwen for you comic nerds out there). We were driving and listening to the soundtrack (by Patrick Stump from Fallout Boy for all you elder Emos out there) and she said "I want to be Ghost-Spider for Halloween!" And I responded "Yeah! That would be really cool!"
And then she hit me with "And Daddy you be Spidey!"
Folks, what was milliseconds away from coming out of my mouth was "Oh sweetie, no one wants to see Daddy wearing a Spidey outfit." But what would that have communicated to her really? That I should be ashamed of my body? That because of my size I can't have fun? What if she starts thinking that way? So instead I said "Yeah sweetie, Daddy would LOVE to wear a Spidey costume!" and as soon as I said it I knew it was true, I have always wanted to wear a super-suit but I keep thinking my gut is too big or I wouldn't look good but screw that noise, I'd rather have fun dressing up with my kid.
So to all you Dads out there, be careful what you say about yourself to your kids, teach them to love their bodies by loving yours.
