I want a gog or cat.

I love animals. All animals. But birds are very fragile and I don't want to get something that will hurt them. I'm in college rn and they are being taken care of my by aunt, but I have been thinking more and more about living on my own. Will I be about to get a cat or dog as long as I get them when they are young. Are certain breeds better? If a dog should I get a smaller one rather than a bigger one? Is there a certain way to train them not to attack my birds or will their instincts be stronger. My birds stay in my room at home since my aunt has 3 dogs so they know what they are and the dogs have been in my room while my birds are in the cage. should I just give up on owning a mammal?
