That Damn Snowy Mountain

I'm playing Chrono Trigger (SNES version) for the first time, and I just got to that snowy mountain that keeps knocking you down. I read a walkthrough that says I had to do something in the very beginning of the game (at the fair) in order to make some dolls appear.

I really, really don't feel like walking backwards all through the game (in fact I doubt I could even figure out how to do that). Can anyone simplify this process for me? Walkthroughs unfortunately don't account for general stupidity.

Fantastic game, by the way. But I guess you all know that.
