CMV: All you need is a downvote/dislike button to fix the algorithm

I'm frustrated with how social media algorithms only show viral content that's often not educational or relevant. If we had a downvote/dislike button, wouldn't it send a strong signal to stop showing us this kind of content?

The current system only allows for likes, which encourages the spread of sensational, low-quality content just because it's shocking or entertaining. By not having a mechanism to express dislike, we're stuck with feeds that are filled with content that doesn't really benefit us or contribute to our knowledge. A downvote/dislike feature could help filter this out by providing a direct way to tell the algorithm what we don't want to see, potentially leading to a cleaner, more personalized feed where quality content gets more visibility. This isn't just about disliking content; it's about improving our online experience by giving us control over what we engage with.

I believe this change could shift the focus from what's popular to what's valuable, reducing the noise of viral trends and promoting content that has substance. What do you think? Can this simple addition really make a difference?
