Assessing the door trim in 1920s house

Hi folks. I'm posting here because I've seen that it's a somewhat common issue faced in these older homes.

I've been dreaming of liberating and staining all of the door trim and molding in the house, and got down to it this weekend. There are only one or two coats that slid right off with heat gun treatment. It looks like an attempt to stain it was made but it does not look good. Can anyone confirm the wood? Guessing it's just pine that might not take to stain.

If I opt to repaint, should I just sand the current coat and paint over it?

Thanks for your thoughts!
