My first week of kickboxing/BJJ/S&C. My training schedule. My progress. Etc. I need some advice.
I just finished up my first week of martial arts and strength and conditioning. It was amazing. Surprisingly, I'm not as sore as I thought I would be (don't get me wrong, I'm so damn sore, but I could go to another class if I had to) Anyways, on Tuesday, I went to two kickboxing classes (each class lasted an hour, so 9am-11am) and then I went to a S&C class. My body hurt but I was feeling okay. I went home, chilled for a few hours, then went to another kickboxing class (5pm-6pm) By the way, in case it means anything, I'm currently training at 'The MMA LAB' and I trained kickboxing under Mike De La Torre and Rob Emerson. I also trained S&C under Jarret Aki. On Wednesday, I trained BJJ (9am-10am), kickboxing (10am-11am), and S&C. I trained BJJ under John Crouch, Benson Henderson, Chris Zubrycki, Adam Marconett, and Keith Hagen. Also, fun fact, Jared Cannonier trains there, I see him sometimes, really cool. Today, which is Thursday, I went to a kickboxing class (9am-10am), then a NoGi BJJ class (10am-11am), which is actually way more fun and easier than with a Gi in my opinion. I went home after NoGi BJJ and chilled for a few hours, then went to two BJJ classes (each class lasted an hour, so 5pm-7pm) and then I went home, which is where I am now. So, I'm not actually as sore as most people would be. I really enjoyed every class I went to this week and I can't wait to go back. I love martial arts and I'm finally achieving my dream, which is training. My main concern though is that for my first kickboxing class, there was no introduction. I kind of just walked in with my gloves and shin guards, they showed us a combo, and we drilled it for a few minutes. Now, it wasn't too bad of a combo (slip, slip, roll, 2, 3, 2, switch kick - for example) but there was no instruction for a beginner like myself. I didn't know how to slip, roll, throw a 2, throw a 3, or even kick - let alone switch kick. There were more combos and stuff but that was the one I remember doing first. We jump rope, shadow box, and drill combos with a partner. To me, this is all complex. Although, the instructor does help you out if he sees you're doing it wrong, but of course I'm doing it wrong, I was never taught, that's your job. Anyways, for my first BJJ class, they brought me to a private area and showed me a lot of cool moves including the Americana. Now, of course, I was absolutely clueless, but they actually really helped me out and showed me how to do things correctly. Very patient of them. Second, third, and fourth class, the instructor shows us a whole bunch of moves, we partner up with someone, then drill it. I'm completely clueless of course, more than kickboxing, but my partner shows me slowly and I eventually get the hang of it. Overall, I love this gym and everyone there is really nice and hospitable so I enjoy training there. I mean, it's the best MMA gym in Arizona. I haven't see much progress physically (of course, it's been 3 days) but to be honest, I've definitely seen some progress in kickboxing and especially BJJ. I just never learned the basics, I kind of just jumped in the deep end without starting in the shallow end first, I guess. But I love training. I guess my main questions are: How long will it take to see progress in these classes? How often should I go to these classes? (kickboxing, BJJ, S&C) considering I feel normal. And what do you think about the gym/instructors? Thanks for reading all of this if you read it all.
