Has anyone here 'inherited' their BP2 from someone in their family?

Hey all, I am in the process of being diagnosed with BP2 and during my last appointment with my psychiatrist, he asked me if there was anyone in my family who has struggled with depression or any other kind of mental disorder before.

As a matter of fact, my maternal grandmother was diagnosed with "chronic depression" in the 1980s when she was still alive, but my dad who’s a doctor and met her a few times before she passed away told me his personal diagnosis was that she was definitely bipolar. She passed away by killing herself but she was on meds for a big part of her life before that and also got hospitalised a few times.

I’m now in the middle of a second big depressive episode (first one happened 3 years ago before I even knew of my grandmother’s story) and I have so many questions. I guess a part of me would be glad to know that I have BP2 as it would explain quite a lot of things about me, but at the same time, BP had turned my grandmother’s life in a nightmare, and I am terrified of struggling as much she did and eventually have my life end in the same way as hers.

Does anyone have a similar story? How has it affected you?
