BSC Book Discussion #3 The Truth about Stacey

Author: Ann M Martin

Release Date: December 1986

Backcover Summary: The truth about Stacey is that she has diabetes. Nobody knows... except her friends in the Baby-sitters Club.

But even they don't know the real truth about Stacey. Stacey's problem is her parents. They won't admit she has the disease, and they drag her to practically every doctor in America!

Seeing so many doctors made Stacey lose one friend, and she won't let it happen again. Especially now - when the Baby-sitters Club needs her more than ever.

What did you think of this book?

Personally, as a kid I much preferred the subplot to the main plot. The baby-sitters agency was piece of work alright (smoking, bringing boys to jobs, ignoring the kids, etc). As an adult the main plot is far more interesting. Stacey’s parents suck in this one (and I typically like Maureen). I like it when she gets Dr. J to just arrange the doctor appointment for her and just springs it on her parents.

Also the advancements in diabetes research since this book really took off! You can tell just by Stacey’s eating habits how much things were changing.
