Cheryl Dunye on The Black Queer Legacy of The Watermelon Woman: "You are archivable."
last month, The Criterion Collection added The Watermelon Woman to it's collection. For work, I got the honor and amazing opportunity to interview Cheryl Dunye about the legacy of her directorial debut as the first narrative feature to ever be directed by a black lesbian.
The most interesting part of the interview? Cheryl Dunye told me to look for Easter eggs in the end credits - while researching, I noticed that Dunye thanks the Jocelyn Taylor and Wood Tolentino in the end credits of The Watermelon Woman; which is to say, that the creators of The CLIT club in NYC, also assisted Cheryl Dunye in creating the film - the lesbian community is everything.
