Given a midi note from a simpler instrument rack, how can I immediately cut out the audio when a new note is played?

EDIT: Welp, guess it was some effects plugins I had that were causing problems. Disabling all of them helped me narrow it down to the root cause (I believe it was a transient shaper). I put the effects on a separate pre-processed kick channel and bounced to audio to work with only a filter and utility throughout the track.

Hi everyone! For context, I like to use my kick drum in a Simpler instance to use as a midi clip, so that I can perform kick rolls easily throughout my tracks (as well as other kick manipulations such as pitch shift). In Simpler, I turned on the 1-shot setting with Gate Mode enabled:

What I expect is that whenever there are say, two eighth note kicks, that the first kick note does not overlap at all with the second one.

However, this is not the case. I added a compressor that does nothing to show the issue visually:

What I want to happen is: as soon as the midi note for the next kick starts, the audio from the first kick note is immediately cut out. The best way I can do this is through a duplicate second channel controlling the mixer speaker on automation for both:

and as a result, I get the same kick drum starting again without the bleed from the first note, which is what I expected from Gate being turned on (below screenshot is from looping the eighth notes and then a quarter note over and over again):

I don't want to manage multiple channels for the same kick drum and I want to ideally manage this with stock plugins. How can I achieve this goal? Alternatively, if there are samplers that solve this problem, can you please recommend them to me? Thanks!

ETA: Switching from 1-shot to classic mode with 1 voice (and retrigger is on) still does not solve the problem as seen below:

ETA V2: Using choke drum rack with the same sample mapped to two different notes results in the same issue. Must be something I am doing wrong but can't figure out what! When I solo reach of the notes, I can hear the cutout happening. But when both play, the audio still plays both when the second kick plays. I even extended the downbeat to overlap the offbeat midi and still no luck.
