Question about GameCube Controllers

Do the newer versions of the GameCube Controller work on Nintendont??? I’ve tried the smash ultimate one before and was playin mario party 4 and it was drifting. I thought it was my Controller but when I went to play smash ultimate and I tried it other game it didn’t do that. Do only the older ones work?
