What really happened with the Chief?
I feel like, for many college students of our generation, we kinda view Chief Illiniwek as this sort of taboo symbol that used to be associated with the University and it's good that it was banned. However, alumni swear by the chief and vehemently defend its meaning. Today in class, there was a heated debate about cultural appropriation vs appreciation and the topic that very quickly came up was the Chief. Upon doing some further digging, it appeared that pressure to get rid of the Chief came from the NCAA rather than actual Native American tribes. I also heard that the chief outfit was donated by a local tribe to the University because of how historically understanding U of I has been of local native American tribes. Again, I don't want to establish these statements as fact, but if true, then why get rid of the Chief? It seems to have been so universally loved by all except a few who sat on the NCAA board.
