Expanding my skillset as an artist, worth it to put my time into an apprenticeship?
Hi there! I have a bachelors degree in illustration and I graduated in April. I’m currently looking for work (ANY work) while developing my personal practice/business. I’ve been out of work since May, and unemployment is beginning to wear on me (tough market for even Starbucks where I live). I also live in Canada, if that’s relevant.
I went to school with many tattoo artists that did their apprenticeships in our final year, and it was then that I became REALLY fascinated with the idea, seeing how accessible it can be. I have recently been considering an apprenticeship, though tattooing is not my “dream job” and rather just something I’ve been very interested in learning for the last few years. It would be nice to do SOMETHING instead of sit home and try to motivate myself to create work, but I understand through research that the process can take about a year or more, is unpaid, or may even require payment. I don’t have any money to invest into this, so I would aim to offer up labour as compensation. However I still need a real job, and this is something that I hope I can do as a side hustle alongside my business or a “Real Job”.
TLDR I guess my question is, is it worth it to pursue an apprenticeship for tattooing to not be my primary source of income (side hustle)? Is the time cost even worth it? It feels bad to possibly take away an opportunity for someone who REALLY wants this as their dream job, and like I’m a poser for not doing it primarily for “the passion” or being really in on body-mod culture (I only have my ears pierced lol). I really like tattoos, I’m just a wuss.
