Are classes worth it?

Hey everyone, I saw a thread on this from several years ago and wanted to ask to get more of an updated perspective. I really want to break in to doing stand-up, my friends have been pushing me for awhile but I have always thought that I couldn't start until I took a class. I live in Washington, DC and have been on SEVERAL waitlists for classes and they have always sold out or I didn't get off the list. I'm starting to get frustrated because I am almost using it as a crutch to not start and put myself out there.

I recently started writing and have tested material on my friends but I think I'm just nervous because I have no idea where to start when it comes to doing an Open Mic. I guess I just want to hear anyone's perspective on if they think classes are worth it or not, or if its better to just completely throw myself out there at an open mic night. I appreciate any and all advice!
