1/22- this is what I emailed back to Canyons School Districts ICE email & the response
Canyons district,
I am writing to express my deep concern about the recent announcement regarding ICE enforcement in spaces like schools, churches, and hospitals. The thought of children being taken out of schools is horrifying and creates an unimaginable sense of fear for students, families, and staff. This kind of enforcement has the potential to create a hostile and unsafe environment for everyone involved.
As a parent, I am deeply disappointed that our state leaders have allowed such policies to go unchallenged, particularly when so many critical issues, such as gun safety, remain unaddressed. The lack of action to protect children in schools—whether from physical threats or the trauma of policies like this—is incredibly disheartening.
Additionally, as a parent of special education children at ______ Elementary, I am increasingly concerned about the future of education funding if the Department of Education is closed or if public funding shifts toward private school vouchers. Utah already struggles with providing adequate funding for public education, especially special education. I fear this will only worsen if money is diverted from public schools to support private interests, leaving vulnerable children without the resources they need to succeed.
I am seriously considering pulling my children out of public school because I no longer feel they are safe or adequately supported. I hope the district will continue to advocate for its students and work to address these critical issues at the state and federal levels.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Response:
Thank you for your thoughtful letter.
Our Board of Education does, indeed, advocate for our students, staff, and families. With the Utah Legislature in session, in fact, they keep quite busy. You can find the Board’s Legislative Priorities here, which includes additional funding for special education.
I know our lawmakers and Governor also appreciate it when constituents like yourself reach out with constructive feedback. If you haven’t already, I’d encourage you to share your thoughts directly with your Senators and Representatives.
Thanks again,
