Advice for beginners?

First time in years playing a proper FPS, and first time ever playing a survival one... haven't won a single firefight yet in 3 hours. I'm always stuck trying to find where I'm being shot at from. Any advice? I do like the game (survival without zombies/monsters), but it is insanely hard for a newbie.
