McAllen/Edinburg living for out-of-staters?
Any out-of-staters living in/lived in the McAllen/Edinburg area? What's your experience been like? I recently received a job offer in the McAllen/Edinburg area and am considering accepting and relocating to the area, but I know very little about the area. I grew up just outside of NYC, have moved around the country for various temporary jobs (Midwest, Hawaii, etc.), and currently live in Southern California (about an hour outside of LA). Aside from the significantly lower cost of living compared to what I'm currently used to, I can't say that the RGV has a ton of appeal to be, but this is a very good job opportunity and I don't want to write it off prematurely. Things I'm interested in hearing about:
- outdoor activities - I love the outdoors and particularly wildlife
- activities for youngish adults (early 30s)
- food culture - I'm sure there's plenty of good Mexican food, but anything else? What's the variety like?
- dog-friendliness - I have a young, very active and social husky mix that loves hiking, going to the dog park, being outside in general
- weather - I'm used to extreme heat, but it's dry here - how bad is the humidity there?
- business culture - Is it primarily small, family owned businesses or commercial chains? I've really missed the mom-and-pop culture that exists in NY while living in SoCal
- Crime - violent/non-violent primarily, areas to avoid?
- Politics - not my favorite topic, but I would consider myself progressive. I'm used to not agreeing with everyone, but I do care a lot about women's rights, international politics, etc. What's the general political vibe there?
Thanks in advance for any input!
