I love this detail about the opening!
I just watched ep 7 (Will watch 8 later) and didn't skip the op even once since the start (even replaying it some times). Now, after watching it multiple times, I am taking more interest in the scene with Rafal (supposedly an adult) in the dark which then cuts to him smiling in the burning classroom.
I can think about it in 2 ways :
He is alive.
We didn't really see him burning (I mean he is a child so I am not shocked we didn't see that) and OPs always have tendency to spoil. So maybe it spoils him being alive.
He is dead.
The OP is not a spoiler to him being dead. Rather, it shows what COULD have been. Rafal gives up on his dream and lives, growing up, but being sad (in the dark, burying his feeling).
The scene after shows him smiling, while standing in the burning class. This shows how he gave up his image and future to be true to himself.
Even though I will be happy if the first case is true (I want Rafal back!!!), I wouldn't mind the 2nd being true because THAT IS STILL AMAZING!!
