It could be a detachable mag BUT ALSO fed with stripper clips ( why change an entire mag after an engagement when you can just shove a few of those bad boys in there and save yourself some energy. It could also mean you are able to bring more ammo with you. No need for tacticool reloads too so that's another +.
It also has the benefit of being California compliant for anyone who would want this abomination for personal use.
The modern UK version holds an extra bayonet inside the magazine instead of rounds so if you ever dull or break your main bayonet, you can just pluck one out of the top of your rifle .
