How do you split the bill at a restaurant

You and a friend go out to eat, both of you order your own appetizer, meal, and dessert that cost roughly the same. Neither of you owe eachother any money, so the question I ponder is, how do you split the bill? Do you split it 50/50 or you pay for your food and they pay for theirs?
