Can someone tell me some artists who have defied the idea of genre?

I'm currently working on an essay for uni about the 'genre as a social construct'. I want to mention some artists/bands that have pubicly defied the idea of genre and have said that they don't want to be pidgeon holed into any specific subculture/genre. I feel like I remember hearing about some band or person saying things like this in the media but I can't seem to find any clear quotes. Can anybody help?
