“Too much muscle is not helpful for mountaineering” argument shouldn’t be applied to female climbers
I am still reading the training for new alpinism book. I read that too much muscle weight is not helpful for mountaineering. And lots of comments on this sub say so too. When I made a post questioning my exercise approaches I got a few comments that I should reduce or even ditch strength training.
I thought about it more and I think that rule should not be applied to female climbers equally to male climbers. I doubt Steve considered about the difference between female and male physiology when he wrote the book.
Women have less muscle to begin with. And it is a lot more difficult for women to gain muscle than men. I think women can do heavier weight, less reps exercise to focus on gaining more muscle mass and bone density without feeling limited by this advice. That will only get female climbers baseline strength closer to average male climbers, never into “too much muscle mass” territory.
Thought this could be an interesting discussion.
