Gummy bears?
I’ve heard that many people use gummy bears as an alternative to the packaged running nutrition. After hearing the recent tread lightly podcast with a nutritionist who confirmed that as long as you are getting 30-60 grams of carbs per hour, these are almost identical as far as your body is concerned to the other gel products, I figured I would try it out.
I got black Forrest gummy bears (5 lb bag for $15) and according to the label, 10 bears has 23g of carbs, therefore, 14 bears has 32g.
I bagged them up in little snack bags for my long run this weekend and hit the trail.
I learned that the stickiness is not to be ignored. Logistics is difficult in eating them from a residual grime perspective. If anyone has an idea for an alternative delivery system, I’m all ears.
I did feel great, energy levels and recovery felt good after a pretty busy weekend (8miles Saturday and 17 miles Sunday) plus farm chores. It seems like the gummy bears are working well from an energy perspective, but the logistics need a bit of work. Also, the price is a fraction of the foil packets, which is also nice.
I’d love to hear what others do (or don’t)
TLDR - how do you transport and eat gummy bears without making a mess while running?
