Why do we place Hannukah candles right to left?

The Shulkhan Aruch dictates (676) to place candles right to left, and light them left to right; it explains lighting them left to right in order to welcome/bless the newest candle/day first.

I understand lighting the newest-added candle first, and that the leftmost is the newest because we placed them right to left, but why place them right to left in the first place?

Is there a deeper reason beyond Hebrew being right to left?
