JR PASS on JR Lines

Hi,

I am planning to get a JR pass for my upcoming trip.

I know you can use the JR pass and reserve seats on the Shinkansen - you can either reserve it on the ticket machine or in person at the JR Ticket Office. My question is I know you can use the JR Pass on JR Lines (Yamanote Line, Chuo Line, Saikyo line etc). If I use my JR pass, can I just insert my JR pass in the ticket gate or do I have to show it to the Ticket Gate Staff every time I enter and leave the ticket gate. Thank you!

Edit: Those questioning, I'm traveling all over Japan for a month so I will be using the Shinkansen daily so yes I've done my calculations :) Thanks for those who've answered!
