My hair care tips

I have fine, straight hair with a normal scalp. I have incorporated some habits and products over the past years that have made them healthier and more voluminous. A lot of these tips you will probably see in hair care videos also but I just wanted to tell my experience with them over the past 5-6 years. My hair is overall very low maintenance and I rarely style them. Hope this helps. 😊

  1. Good nutrition: Everyone knows this so won’t elaborate. I take supplements (vitamin E and B complex) but use your discretion for this please.

  2. Haircut: The haircut every always suggests for fine hair is “layers”. That’s what I also got for several years. It always look great for the first few weeks but then it starts looking stringy and unkempt. So I would go for frequent haircuts and lose whatever length I grew and the cycle constantly repeated with my hair not “growing any longer”. Couple of years I got tired of the layers and decided to be done with them. I now get a straight or U cut with some face framing pieces. My hair looks much thicker because the bottom is not thinned out and its neater when styled in braids or buns because errant strands are not sticking out.

  3. Protective hairstyles: I used to either wear my hair in a pony or leave them open. Nowadays I usually have my hair in a loose braid or bun. I keep switching up my hairstyle throughout the day to prevent traction hair loss. I use satin scrunchies, hair sticks or nice quality claw clips which won’t snag on my hair. Because my hair is usually in such hairstyles, it barely gets tangled which leads to my next point:

  4. Don’t brush your hair multiple times if you can help it. I have stopped using hair brushes because they pull on hair a lot. I use a wide tooth comb to detangle when needed. I understand this might be harder for people with a different hair texture than mine but reducing the amount of times you comb your hair or even switching to a wide tooth comb will help a lot.

  5. Protect hair while sleeping by using a satin pillowcase or a satin bonnet. Amazon has a lot of options. I use a pillowcase because it’s easier for me. This was the easiest switch I’ve made. I rarely find hair on my pillowcase now. Linking some of the ones I have bought: Link1 -500, Link 2 - 500, Link 3 - 400

  6. Microfiber hair towel: Again very popular advice for very good reason. Do not need to invest in a very expensive one. Link to the ones I bought off amazon. Decathlon also has some very nice options.

  7. Let shampoo sit like conditioner! Didn’t know this for the longest time but what a gamechanger. I use way less shampoo now thanks to this tip.

  8. For volume: I airdry my hair and use a small claw clip to put my front hair in a pouffe/puff. I look ridiculous for 2-3 hours but fabulous for 2-3 days. Worth it!

  9. Hair oiling: I don’t enjoy it and I don’t see major benefits from this. Took me a while to accept that hair oiling IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. I lose too much hair and need to wash 3-4 times to wash oil out. I have tried various oils as well. Now if I have to oil, I use a few drops to just put on my scalp and gently massage. I oil maybe 1-2 times a week with a homemade one for dandruff and hairfall control (coconut and almond oil with methi and curry leaves).

  10. Optional- Silicon Shampoo Brush: I use it for every other wash. It’s especially helpful when I have gone several days between washes and my scalp is feeling heavy. Helps with dandruff too. Again easily available but here is the link to the one I’ve been using for 3 years.

This is a damn long post and if you are still reading, kudos to you! But if even one of these tips helps anyone, I’ll be glad. 😊
